Object description :

"Italian Hand Carved Marble Masks By Satyr"
Set of 2 extraordinary Italian masks by Satyr. Entirely sculpted in marble. Original Italian, 19th century. The satyr is a mythical creature from Greek mythology, known as a follower of the god of wine Dionysus. Satyrs are half-man, half-goat, with pointed ears, goat legs, a tail and sometimes horns. They symbolize nature, lust, music and revelry. They are often depicted as playful and licentious figures, dancing, playing the flute and having fun. In Roman mythology, they resemble fauns. They embody instinct, seduction and the wild side of man. They can be hung on the wall, or we can have a stand made. In good condition, both have the left horn broken off.
