"Vanity Demons Angels Religious 17th 17th Colonial Devil Temptation Bosch Christ Death "
Vanitas late 17th century representing the struggle between salvation and redemption. It is an oil on canvas depicting a man on his deathbed, in his last moments, torn between the salvation evoked by Christ in heaven accompanied by angels or hell. Demons in the spirit of the paintings of Hieronymus BOSCH tempt him and try to make him fall into the dark side, hell and take his soul away. They even present him with the portrait of a pretty young woman as a final temptation. In the upper part of the painting, the celestial light opens onto a vision of the triumphant Christ and the cross, a promise of redemption and hope. This composition mixes Christian iconography, baroque symbolism and theatrical expressiveness with a contrasting staging between the forces of darkness and those of salvation. The abundant details: musical instruments and scores, purses overflowing with gold coins underline the Vanity of material goods in the face of death. The blue, red and gold colors and the multiple details are reminiscent of a Spanish work or of the colonial school of South America. The painting was formerly relined, there are one or two missing scales, and some repainting but nothing serious, it can be hung as is. It is presented in a more recent gilded wooden frame.
