Numbered in 160 copies, signed in pencil lower right and in the lower corner of the plate, publisher's dry stamp (L.1140.a) René Quillivic is a Breton sculptor, wood engraver, painter and ceramist, born in Plouhinec (Finistère) and died in Paris. Of modest origins, he was first a carpenter before training at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He drew much of his inspiration from his native Brittany, immortalizing local traditions, landscapes and figures. He is known for his monumental sculptures, notably his war memorials and public statues. He also collaborated with the HB faience factory in Quimper. His engraved work consists mainly of woodcuts, often inspired by Breton, maritime and Celtic themes. Among his most famous engravings are Devant l'océan, La Fille du pêcheur, and Marie Breneol.
