It represents the Greek general Philopoemen, strategist of the Achaean League in the 2nd century BC, famous for his bravery and patriotism. The hero is depicted naked, at the moment he removes his sword from its scabbard, emphasizing strength and warrior determination.
David d'Angers wanted to make it an exemplary image of civic energy and ancient virtue. The statue is now kept at the Louvre Museum. Bronze proof with brown patina resting on a red morello cherry marble base.
