Jian “nogime / Hare Hair” Tenmoku Tea Bowl 南宋建窯兔毫天目盞, Southern Song Dynasty 12th–13th Century

Stoneware tea bowl from the Southern Song dynasty (12th–13th century), Jian kilns, Fujian province. Of classic conical form with slightly flaring rim, standing on a narrow foot. The lustrous black-brown glaze is suffused with subtle vertical hare’s fur streaks (Nogime Tenmoku in Japan), with lighter pooling in the well. The foot is unglazed, exposing the coarse, iron-rich stoneware typical of Jian production.

Such bowls were highly valued in Song dynasty tea culture (doucha 斗茶), and were later brought to Japan where they became revered as Tenmoku wares, central to the early tea ceremony tradition.
