Song Or Tang Dynasty Black-glazed Teabowl With Flambé “flower” Splashes
A fine and rare Chinese black-glazed teabowl, decorated with dramatic flambé “flower” splashes in milky-blue and turquoise, flowing against a lustrous dark glaze. This distinctive effect is associated with the celebrated “flower-glaze” (hua you) tradition of the Tang and Five Dynasties, continued in the Song period at kilns such as Lushan (Duandian) in Henan province.
The bowl has gently rounded sides rising from a neatly cut footring, the glaze stopping short above the base to reveal the buff stoneware body. Inside, three bold splashes radiate from the rim, producing an iridescent play of color highly admired in tea culture. Such bowls anticipate the famous Jian tea wares of the Song and were treasured later in Japan as prototypes of Tenmoku.
Period: Tang–Song dynasty, 9th–11th century
Diameter: 11 cm
Height: 4.8 cm
Condition: Good, with minor wear consistent with age.
Provenance: Private collection, South of France, formed before 1960.
A rare teabowl type, closely comparable to examples in the Palace Museum (Beijing), the Henan Museum, and the Meiyintang Collection. Links to these museum references are attached for comparison.
