[NAPOLEON I] Jean-François LE SUEUR (1760 – 1837), French composer and director of music for Emperor Napoleon I.
Signed manuscript entitled “House of HM the Emperor and King. Service of the Grand Chamberlain”. [The Tuileries] Paris, December 31, 1809; 2 1/2 pages in folio.
Beautiful document listing all the musicians and technicians in the service of the court, with their salary per year and per month for the year 1809, certified true copy, dated and signed by the director of music for Emperor Jean-François le Sueur. In 1804, Napoleon appointed Le Sueur master of the Tuileries chapel. At this time he performed his most famous work, Ossian or the Bards, which was a huge success at the Opera and became the favorite opera of the Emperor, who awarded him the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honor. He subsequently composed the Triumphal March for the Coronation of Napoleon and, on this occasion, conducted a mass by Paisiello and a Vivat by Abbé Roze at Notre-Dame.
