Object description :

"Nun's Cell In An Egg 19th Century"
Nun's cell in an egg, an object of piety and devotion made by a nun around the middle of the 19th century.
The nun is praying, holding her missal. On the wall is a cross and these three spiritual sentences: either suffer or die, God alone, salvation is in the Cross. Next to her is her bed. The exterior of the egg is decorated with velvet and golden floral motifs. The glass is fixed with cut and crafted gold paper.
Nuns in convents made this type of object themselves, which were offered or sold to visitors and family. It is rare to find an egg containing a cell. Rare because the nun had to be very meticulous and skillful, and rare because it is very fragile. More often, small wooden and glass display cases containing a nun's room are found.
