"Paintings 'the Cave Of The Dog' Naples Until The 18th Century"
Gouache on paper entitled 'Grotta dal cane' The Cave of the Dog is located in the Phlegraean Fields near Pozzuoli, close to Lake Agnano. It is the site of toxic fumes, due to the volcanic activity of the region. Its name comes from the custom of using a dog to demonstrate the presence of these fumes. Several versions exist, one sold at Christies and another at the Museum of Fine Arts in Krakow. (see photos) Identified as being by Roberto Fernando di Roberti (Bassano 1786-1837) No trace of signature perhaps under the marie Louise.
