"Basque Folk Art - Traditional Xahakoa Gourd - Early 20th Century Or Earlier"
Basque folk art - Traditional xahakoa gourd - Early 20th century or earlierTraditional gourd from the Basque country called xahakoa. According to the book Musée Basque et de l'histoire de Bayonne, édition le festin, 2008 (by Olivier Ribeton, Jacques Battesti, Maider Etchepare Jaureguy), the Xahakoa gourd "is probably of recent introduction to the French Basque Country. Like traditional wineskins, it was first made in Spain, before being copied and marketed throughout the southwest of France towards the end of the 1930s." Given the apparent great antiquity of this example, perhaps it comes from the Spanish Basque Country or from the very first French manufactures. Canvas and leather gourd. The interior seems to me to be lined with another pocket. This one seems very dry, probably goatskin or other. Horn spout. The leather strap is cut and part is missing. Height 37cmWeight 480gr
