After her training, she worked as a portrait and genre painter. Until 1890, her paintings, including portraits of Emperor Wilhelm I and Minister of Justice Heinrich von Friedberg, were frequently exhibited at German exhibitions.
She married the theater director Bruno von Lepel-Gnitz (1843–1908) on September 17, 1880, in Rodenbeck. She moved to Hanover in 1890 and, after her marriage, also became famous as a fairy tale writer under the name Hedwig von Lepel-Gnitz.
