Archibald Wells (born In 1874) - Portrait Of A Woman With Flowers - Circa 1900 - Glasgow School
Archibald Wells was born in Glasgow in 1874, but it was in Sydney, where he followed his father, that he learned to draw and paint. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1884 to pursue his career, notably exhibiting in London at the English Art Club. Archibald Wells's works are rare.
This is probably because the artist devoted more time to the business he inherited from his father. Indeed, Archibald took over the business of his father Andrew, a lacquerer and stained-glass artist. Guthrie & Wells was one of the major stained-glass makers in Scotland and England during the era of the Glasgow School and Macintosh. Archibald Wells's works naturally borrow from the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, and were tinged with a Symbolist spirit during the Arts & Crafts era.
