Antique patinated bronze hotel, table or desk bell, ca. 1860–1880
The domed base, decorated with a guilloché scale pattern, is topped with a figurine in the round representing a man in 18th-century costume, wearing a tricorn, raising a glass in one hand and holding a bouquet in the other.
The internal system activates four bells in the shape of oak acorns (a refined yet invisible detail) suspended from four flexible brass blades, producing a very beautiful sound.
Marked “DC” on the base (under the character), probably the monogram of the founder or workshop.
A rare object that is both utilitarian and decorative, testifying to the refined accessories present in 19th-century hotels and businesses. Notice to campanophile collectors! (Yes, campanology is the science or study of bells… ????)
