Dated in the margin by Delacroix "7bre [18]57" Throughout his life, Delacroix was interested in felines, which he observed with fascination from the 1820s onwards at the Jardin des Plantes, absorbing their attitudes and elegance. He regularly visited, with his friend Antoine-Louis Barye, the menageries of wild animals at the Saint-Cloud fair and the Natural History Museum, to study the animals in real life.
