Object description :

"Jacques Cinquin (1942-2019). Hope 1965"
Hope 1965. Signed and dated lower right and titled, dated and countersigned on the back. It must probably be a model for a tapestry project. Jacques CINQUIN (1942-2019). Extract from the daily newspaper "La montagne" of June 20, 2019: Jacques Cinquin was born on October 1, 1942 in Paris. A graduate of the National School of Applied Arts in the capital, he settled in Aubusson in 1967, becoming a professor of painting at the ENAD. In the years that followed, he made two trips to the USA, collaborating with painters to develop small-format tapestries. He settled permanently in Aubusson in 1970, dividing his time between teaching (later appointed professor of mural art at the ENAD in Aubusson in 1983) and creating. Cinquin, who came to Aubusson on the advice of one of his teachers, Robert Wogensky (recently deceased), was quickly caught by the tapestry bug, first through contact with artists of the caliber of Michel Tourlière and Jacques Lagrange. He anchored his work in Aubusson while exhibiting in France and abroad. He always worked by themes, the circus being his favorite subject, with sumptuous exhibitions in Monaco. Beaches, cycling, and popular dances also greatly inspired him. The circus also inspired a book in 1996 (he has several works of art to his credit). Tapestry, drawing, painting, sculpture... For several years, due to life's circumstances, he divided his time between Aubusson and Normandy. He also traveled a lot, which led him to fill sketchbooks. He devoted himself to painting, watercolor, but also to tapestry and for several years to sculpture (one is located in front of his workshop in the station district). The Cité de la tapisserie was going to launch the creation of a monumental diptych, a tribute commission that Jacques Cinquin saw as a consecration. Life decided otherwise. He leaves behind a substantial body of work, with hundreds of tapestries to rediscover. They are the ones that speak best of him.
