Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau, born in 1700 and died in 1782, was a French physicist, botanist, and agronomist. A member of the Royal Academy of Sciences since 1738, of which he was elected President three times, he left behind a significant body of work as a scientific writer in fields as varied as shipbuilding and service, fishing, wheat cultivation and conservation, and forest management. Appointed Inspector General of the Navy in 1739, he created a naval school in 1741, which in 1765 would become the School of Engineers-Constructors. Continuing the work of Réaumur, he relaunched the Description des Arts et Métiers in 1757 and opposed the Encyclopedists and Buffon.
