Appointed Inspector General of the Navy in 1739, he created a naval school in 1741, which in 1765 would become the School of Engineers-Constructors. Continuing the work of Réaumur, he relaunched the Description des Arts et Métiers in 1757 and opposed the Encyclopedists and Buffon.
