Artist: Chikanobu Toyohara 豊原周延(1838-1912)
This print represents Emperor Meiji during the review of his army. It was made by Chikanobu Toyohara, on January 29, 1887 and was published by Hayashi Kichizo.

It was a triptych but unfortunately only two pages are presented in very good condition.

Emperor Meiji (November 3, 1852 - July 30, 1912) was a major emperor of Japan for his participation in the radical change of society from feudal Japan dominated by the samurai to "modern" Japan influenced by European cultures.

Chikanobu Toyohara 豊原周延 (1838-1912), his artist name is also 楊洲周延: Yōshū Chikanobu. He is of the samurai caste and fought alongside the loyalists to the shogun. After the reissue of the shogun, he decided to become an artist in his youth he learned the Kano school. Chikanobu is recognized as a master of bijinga, images of beautiful women, and for his illustrations of the changes in women's fashion, both in traditional clothing and in Western clothing.
