"Terracotta Tobacco Pot By Johann Maresch, Late 19th Century "
Here is a nice barrel-shaped terracotta tobacco jar with a lid depicting a Black character in festive attire smoking a cigarette in a New Orleans spirit from the end of the 19th century. It is a work signed Johann Maresch and the model is numbered 3380 which gives you an idea of his prolific work. He was born in what was then called the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the city of Usti Nad Labem, today in the Czech Republic. Therefore he was never German as is unfortunately mentioned everywhere on the Internet.
