Burma, 19th century, very old and important serene and powerful representation of a Buddhist monk in a meditative position on a lotus-shaped base, arms outstretched and both hands joined in the gesture called "nop", fingers at the height of the nose and head slightly lowered in a gesture of beautiful deference. This emblematic sculpture embodies the elegant sobriety of Laotian spirituality and captures the essence of Buddhist teachings. It presents traces of polychromy and gilding. Monks enjoy great prestige and are highly respected, it is forbidden to shake their hands, so it is the "nop" gesture that replaces hello and goodbye.
