"Japanese Satsuma Tripod Box, Attributed To Kinkozan, Kyoto, C.1890"
A refined Japanese Satsuma covered box on three legs,
attributed to the renowned Kyoto studio of Kinkozan, Meiji period. The creamy
ground with fine crackle is richly decorated with polychrome bouquets,
heightened with gilding. A black-and-gold “sayagata” border frames the
lid.
The interior and lid reverse are decorated with small purple flower
sprigs, a detail reserved for superior wares. The base carries a black
cartouche with traces of gilt characters, consistent with the Kinkozan
signature style.
This piece exemplifies the Kyoto luxury Satsuma tradition, intended for
the export market. Its floral imagery carries symbolic meaning of prosperity,
beauty and longevity.
