"Japanese Satsuma-style Enamel Brooches, Kyoto/yokohama, C. 1900 (pair)"
A pair of Japanese export brooches in Satsuma-style enamel on metal, Meiji–Taisho period, c. 1900. Both items feature high-quality enamel decoration with typical Satsuma motifs: one depicting three kimono-clad women in an interior, the other a landscape with a bird amid maple leaves and Mount Fuji in the background. The enamelling imitates classic Satsuma ware with characteristic craquelure and profuse use of gold. The square brooch has visible wear to the gilding, mainly along the edges (see photos). Reverse sides with original period fittings, brass/copper base. Both structurally sound, no restoration, no cracks or enamel losses.
Provenance: private UK collection.
Sizes:
Round brooch: 4.6 cm diameter, 1 cm thick
Square brooch: 4.7 × 4.8 cm, 1.1 cm thick
