"Renaissance Style Ceremonial Shield, Embossed Copper, 19th Century"
Large antique replica in repoussé copper of the ceremonial shield of King Henry II of France, the original of which is currently on display at the Louvre Museum. The general shape is that of a classical shield with a slightly domed face. A very fine reissue of a model attributed to the French goldsmith Etienne Delaune (1518-1583). The shield incorporates a decorative repertoire of ancient warriors, very fashionable at that time. Surrounded by mascarons, interlacing, warrior attributes and chained vanquished, the central medallion presents a battle scene said to be that of Hannibal's victory over the Roman troops at Cannae in southern Italy in 216 BC. A fine quality object, large in size and very decorative; in excellent condition and with a very beautiful old patina. The reverse is equipped with a wall hanging system and four loops in the diagonals to possibly allow two crossed swords to be displayed. French work dating from the end of the 19th century.
