Géo De Vlamynck was born in 1897 in Bruges and died in 1980 in Koekelberg (Brussels). He was a painter, fresco artist, stained-glass cartoonist, interior designer, and teacher. His students included Nicolas de Staël, Maurice Wyckaert, and Roger Somville.
Training
1909: Entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges, noticed by Flori Van Acker (1858–1940), painter and director of the Academy.
WWI: Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, receiving first prize with distinction in drawing and perspective.
1919: Enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels; studied decorative painting and composition under Constant Montald, Herman Richir, and Jean Delville.
1921: Won first prize for monumental composition ("Repentance after the Fault").
1922: Won first prize with highest distinction ("The Renewal of the Centuries").
1923: Traveled to Italy to study frescoes and mosaics.
1927: Continued studies at the Institute of Architecture and Decorative Arts of La Cambre, under Gustave Van de Woestijne (decorative & monumental painting) and Herman Teirlinck (theatre).
1929: Graduated in Painting with distinction.
Career Highlights
1930: Participated in the Universal Exhibition of Liège and Antwerp.
1933: Created stained glass for the Religious Art Pavilion at the Chicago World's Fair; fresco and stained glass for Cordemoy Abbey; stained glass for Carmelite convent in Jambes and Saint-Symphorien Church.
1935: Brussels World's Fair — monumental frescoes for the Art Glass Pavilion (with Nicolas de Staël), Agriculture & Gas Pavilion, and "Maris Stella" Chapel.
1937: Designed stained glass for the Belgian Congo Pavilion in Paris.
Taught at the Academy of Saint-Gilles, Bischoffsheim School, and Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Brussels).
Major Public Works (1950–1965)
1953: Monumental mosaic The Naiads (15 × 2.7 m), Neptunium swimming pool, Schaerbeek.
1956: Mural painting for "Prehistory" section, Royal Museum of Art and History.
1957: Terracotta mosaic, Royal Athenaeum, Welkenraedt; murals for Salzinnes swimming pool, Namur (destroyed in 1921).
1962: Stained glass for Chapel of the Virgin, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Koekelberg.
Alongside his monumental projects, De Vlamynck produced paintings and drawings in smaller formats. His work integrates symbolism, modernism, and a mastery of monumental decoration, leaving a lasting mark on Belgian public art.
