First edition of this interesting history of Napoleon I illustrated with beautiful engravings in the text by Horace Vernet and Hippolyte Bellangé. Set in a period binding in green half-shagreen with corners, spine with decorated raised bands. Solid binding, spine slightly faded, headcaps, corners and edges of covers a little rubbed. Paper covering the first cover partly torn. Clean interior, very rare, barely visible foxing. Complete IN-8 format 568 pages. Copy offered by NAPOLEON III with the inscription diagonally and in large letters on the title page: "Given by the Emperor Napoleon III to Colonel GUILLON commanding the 6th Hussar Regiment, May 1870"
