Poplars By Sohn Dated 1905

Oil on canvas depicting an avenue of poplars signed lower right by Sohn. Beautiful perspective and depth of this luminous painting where the shadow of the trees is well mastered. A work not without recalling the painters of Barbizon. This painting signed Sohn and dated on the back of the painting 1905 is probably by the German painter Alfred Sohn Rethel. This one comes from a family of German painters going from the grandfather (Alfred Rethel), to the parents (Karl Rudolf and Else) and three sons (Otto, Karli and Alfred). Alfred Sohn Rethel (1875-1958) is the best known, modernist painter of the Dusseldorf school of painting. He was active in Dusseldorf, Berlin, Paris and Barbizon.
