Return From Fishing, 18th Century Woodwork Painting

Important wood paneling painting dating from the 2nd half of the 18th century in its Louis XV frame molded in original cream-colored wood paneling.

In this unusual wood paneling painting we encounter the theme of the sea with in the foreground a still life with fish accompanied by a starfish and some shells and in the background a large maritime landscape with an imaginary city erected on a cliff at the foot of which a masonry jetty juts out into the sea, a boat in the distance sails on a calm sea.
The sky is tormented and cloudy, suggesting a past or future storm.
The composition and the workmanship remain somewhat naive as is often the case in this type of painting but the whole on the theme of the sea remains harmonious and very decorative, the fish are very well treated and realistic.
