"Large Dark Wood Crucifix Inlaid With Mother-of-pearl – Indochina (vietnam), Late 19th Century"
Rare and spectacular table or altar crucifix, in tropical wood (probably rosewood or ironwood), entirely decorated with polychrome mother-of-pearl inlays, typical of the workshops of French Indochina (Annam, Tonkin), circa 1880–1900. The decoration, of great finesse, presents a profusion of stylized plant motifs — foliage, flowers, vines — arranged with remarkable symmetry. The pyramidal base, also inlaid, harmoniously completes the ensemble, emphasizing the verticality of the piece. Note: a small loss of mother-of-pearl inlay is visible in the center of the cross (see photos). A fine example of Vietnamese decorative art from the end of the 19th century, combining craftsmanship and French aesthetic influence. Dimensions: height 56 cm, width 21 cm, depth 16 cm. Origin: French Indochina (Vietnam). Period: late 19th century.
