Giuseppe Palizzi (lanciano, 19 March 1812 – Paris, 1 January 1888), Cows.

Artist: Giuseppe Palizzi
Giuseppe Palizzi was born in Lanciano on March 19, 1812. His father encouraged him to study law, but he abandoned it in 1835 and moved to Naples the following year to study painting at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts.

He was a pupil of Anton Sminck van Pitloo and then of Gabriele Smargiassi from Vasto, becoming familiar with the landscape painting of the Posillipo school.

He participated in various Bourbon Biennials, gaining recognition and appreciation.

In 1844, Giuseppe decided to leave for Paris, where he began frequenting various ateliers and artists of the Barbizon school, who later influenced him. He came into direct contact with Corot and Courbet (Realism).

In Paris, he established his home near the Fontainebleau forest, a recurring subject in numerous paintings. In fact, starting in 1845, he began exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salons, achieving considerable success. In France, he gradually established himself through purchases and official commissions from collectors.

In 1859, he received the important official recognition of the Legion of Honor in France. By now, he was an established and wealthy artist, with an elegant studio and commissions from the French state.
In 1860, Francis II of Bourbon appointed him a corresponding member of the Royal Bourbon Society of Naples, and after the unification of Italy, he received public recognition from the House of Savoy, first as a knight and then as an officer of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus.
In 1878, he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy.
During his life, Giuseppe Palizzi was a constant point of reference for most Neapolitan and, more generally, Italian painters who traveled to France. He also kept in touch with various French artists and intellectuals.

He died in Paris, having amassed considerable wealth, fame, and honors.
A naturalist painter associated with realism, he painted many rural and pastoral subjects, seascapes, still lifes, and rarely genre scenes. He was similar in talent to his brother Filippo, although considered slightly inferior.

The painting is an oil on canvas, depicting two cows in a countryside setting.
