1914-2006
After the Samnite Rider of Pompeii.
Gerard Schäperkötter was originally a graphic designer and chose free painting in 1914. His approach to the medium was spontaneous and free and, after a preliminary period in figurative art, led to powerful compositions in the 1960s and 1970s. In their balance between abstraction and figuration, these are somewhat reminiscent of the lyrical-abstract art of the École de Paris. The painter created a new reality from memory and imagination, which he often developed in themes such as beaches, walls, or gardens.
Gerard Schäperkötter was a restrained artist who composed his canvases and gouaches very quietly. From memory and imagination, he created a new reality. Schäperkötter was inspired by the expressionism of the Cobra movement and the École de Paris.
