Jean De Bosschère. 2 Engravings.
Artist: Jean De Bosschère
Two framed engravings. Early 20th centuryJean de Bosschère (1878 - 1953)Originally a multiple body of work (novels, poems, essays, journal, paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures...).Admired by some writers but largely unknown to the public, he crossed the great literary movements of the century without lingering, more inclined to survey "the dark frontiers of the human" than to mingle with the crowd. He illustrated works by Oscar Wilde and Antonin Artaud, among others. From 1905 onwards, he regularly produced engravings to illustrate his own books, such as Édifices anciens (1908), Dolorine et les ombres (1911), Twelve occupations (1916), Le Bourg (1922) and Job le pauvre (1923).He worked in the Art Nouveau style. De Bosschère's style bears similarities to the work of Aubrey Beardsley. Like Beardsley, De Bosschère drew undulating, decorative forms and stylized plants, and made comfortable use of the distribution of black and white across the surface. The black and ochre printed drawings in Dolorine and the Shadows demonstrate De Bosschère's interest in all things occult and obscure.
