This Franciscan priest was born in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in Padua, Italy, in 1231.
His attributes are the lily and the Christ Child, as seen in this painting, as well as the Franciscan habit, a mule, or a flaming heart.
He is known as the patron saint of lost objects.
He was canonized in 1232 by Pope Gregory IX due to more than 40 recorded healings.
This oil on canvas can be dated to the late 17th or early 18th century.
The canvas is very thick, and the stretcher appears to be of a later period. A patch was added long ago to reinforce the lower right corner of the back.
The canvas shows a small tear near the Saint’s right shoulder and a few touch-ups, which do not detract from the charm of this baroque religious painting.
