Object description :

""the Couple" Attributed To Jean Martin-roch Around 1930"
A man and a woman, joined by their long hands, stand before a bare landscape. The entire world of Martin-Roch. Poetic and stylized surrealist painting from the 1930s. Some flaking. Size 77 x 56 cm. Jean Martin-Roch is a figurative painter who treats the subject and rejects abstraction and all the conceptual aestheticization that accompanies it. Directly inspired by ancient and classical artists, he places himself in the lineage of Giotto or Fouquet, whom he venerates. At the top of this pantheon is the Aix master, Cézanne, who, as a child, would have made him jump on his knees and whose influence permeates all his painting. The hermitage that was Pierredon encouraged him to invite poetic characters, landscapes and objects of a monastic simplicity into his paintings, thus sharing with us the ideal of spiritual beauty that was his.
