Leo Michelson (in Latvian: Leo Mihelsons), born May 12, 1887 in Riga, died in 1978 in New York, was a Latvian artist who became a naturalized American. He studied in Saint Petersburg but was forced to leave the country during the Russian Revolution. He fled to Germany, where he became involved with Impressionism, and then to France from 1920, where he was a member of the School of Paris. There, he built an international reputation for his paintings, prints, and sculptures. As a prominent member of the School of Paris, his works were exhibited in major exhibitions throughout Western Europe, the Soviet Union, and the United States. After the fall of Paris to Nazi Germany in 1939, Michelson fled to New York, where he obtained American citizenship and spent the rest of his life. Leo Michelson was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1937 and the Latvian Order of Merit in 1938. The Leo Michelson Museum, opened in 1985 in Marshall, Texas, houses a major collection of his works.
Museums in Baltimore, Jerusalem, Paris (Museum of Modern Art), Riga, San Diego, and Tel Aviv also hold works by this artist. Léo Michelson is referenced in Bénézit, volume 9, p. 595, 1999 edition.
