Antique Saint-louis Crystal Champagne Bucket, Thistle Or Model
The Thistle Or model is one of the most iconic creations of the Saint-Louis crystal house, inspired by the thistle – a symbol of nobility and resilience – and adorned with a fine gold frieze. Created in 1908 for the International Exhibition in Nancy, the Thistle collection (originally named Chardon) embodies the spirit of French Art Nouveau. The thistle, heraldic flower of the city of Nancy, became the central motif of this design. In 1913, as a gesture of Franco-British friendship, the name was anglicized to Thistle.
The collection is distinguished by its bevel cuts and gold or platinum friezes applied by hand. Each piece is mouth-blown and hand-cut.
There are several variations of the Thistle champagne bucket, notably in Gold and Platinum versions; some models feature side handles, others do not.
Although this item bears no visible signature, its authenticity is unquestionable. It is worth noting that prior to the 1930s, Saint-Louis did not yet systematically engrave its logo with acid. Many pieces produced before this standardization — especially those mouth-blown and hand-cut — were sold without any visible mark. Identification therefore relies on stylistic, technical, and historical criteria specific to the house.
As for its condition, the bucket is intact: it shows no cracks or chips; however, slight wear to the gilding is visible (see last photo).
