French Gilt Bronze Table Clock - Empire, Circa 1815
French gilt bronze table clock - Empire, circa 1815
Description:
Elegant, richly decorated mercury-gilt bronze table clock from the French Empire period. The enameled dial, with Roman numerals, bears the indication “Paris” along with another signature that is not perfectly legible.
The mechanism on the back is engraved with the number 1815
The composition depicts a classical male figure, probably Bacchus (Dionysus), god of wine and pleasures, represented with a crown and bunch of grapes in his right hand. Next to him an amphora and brazier complete the scene, symbolizing rituals and celebrations. The base features fine bas-reliefs with mythological and allegorical motifs, including eagles, trophies, and medallions.
Condition:
The clock is in working order, but needs a complete overhaul of the mechanism. The gilding has a patina consistent with age, with minor oxidation and signs of age.
H 46 x W 36 x D 30 cm.
