Superb and important oval box in tinned copper on the inside, and decorated with pierced brass appliques.
The "fittings": feet, hinges, lock hasp and the 2 side handles, are all treated in cut brass.
The lock entry shows 2 birds on either side, the hinges end on the lid in the shape of fleurs-de-lis and a monstrance motif (?) on the top of the lid could refer to a religious function (large wafer box, which could also explain the tinning, indicating in any case a function of food container?)
The fixing rivets are themselves in copper and contribute to a work of very high quality of manufacture. The metal is still very heavy cause thick, going in the same direction of a popular but relatively luxurious production.
The piece also has, on both the bass part and its cover, and extremely rarely, hallmarks (property or castle inventory?) C*L Unfortunately, I have not found any correspondence to these marks. I remain interested in reading your comments and opinions, or additional information on this point.
