Object description :

"Mahogany Living Room Furniture From The Directoire Consulate Period Attributed To Demay"
Living room furniture consisting of a sofa for 2  and 2 mahogany armchairs. Parisian production from the end of the Directoire period or the beginning of the Consulate, late 18th century or 1800. Attributed to Jean Baptiste Demay, not stamped.

This type of production is typical of what is called the Return from Egypt style, very fashionable at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The chair in its manufacture is still entirely in the tradition of the 18th century but it prefigures what would become the Empire style at the beginning of the 19th century.

Beautiful model with elegant proportions, fine and nervous sculpture, perfect finishes. If our chair does not bear a stamp to precisely identify its author, it is certainly the work of a good Parisian seatmaker.

There are many similarities with the productions of Jean-Baptiste-Bernard Demay (1759-1848) - seat maker, received master on February 4, 1784;

Excellent condition, old restorations. Varnish redone by our cabinetmaker. Upholstered on all sides, it can be placed in the center of a room to separate the living room from the dining room. The sofa is a 3-seater, reduced to 2-seater by a talented cabinetmaker, which makes it easier to place.

Sofa: Length: 101cm
Height: 99cm
Depth: 71cm
Seat height: 36.5cm

Armchairs: Width: 59.5cm
Depth: 64cm
Seat height: 42cm
Backrest height 92cm
