Hussar Officer's Saber Late 18th Century
HUSSAR OFFICER'S SABER, late 18th century.
Saber known as German-style hilt.
Guard with canted sides, column joint arc extended to the winding quillon.
Almond-shaped crossguard. Checkered walrus tooth hilt.
Curved blade with reed and counterpoint at the end, finely chiseled with attributes.
On one side, a hussar charging on a placard with a bundle of weapons at the bottom.
On the other side, a hussar on a placard with a radiant sun, a Roman emperor on the lion and a slave from behind.
Fairly rare symbolism which suggests that this saber was made before 1793, the radiant sun disappearing from the blades after the fall of the monarchy.
Brass scabbard with two bracelets and iron dart.
Blade length 78 cm.
