Pair Of 18th-century Gilded Wooden Altar Cards

Altar cards were used in the Catholic liturgy as a support for the texts of prayers recited during Mass, particularly those recited by the priest at the altar. Both altar cards feature a symmetrical structure. The upper part is adorned with an elegant fretworked cymatium featuring floral motifs and baroque scrolls, enhanced with gilding that lends the object a solemn and precious feel. The sides feature decorative elements carved in the shape of vine shoots and stylized flowers. The flat central surface of each altar card features an oval scroll with the liturgical text printed on paper. The text is surrounded by a blue painted decoration framing the content. A altar card titled "SACERDOS" is likely intended for the "Suscipe, sancte Pater" prayer or other prayers recited at the beginning of Mass. The other, titled "INITIUM SANCTI EVANGELII," likely contains the prologue to the Gospel of John ("In principio erat Verbum..."), traditionally read at the end of the Tridentine Mass. The altar cards show signs of wear consistent with age (see photos), but overall they retain great historical and aesthetic value.
