Based on an iconic composition by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, this work titled Innocence depicts a young, half-undressed girl gently and melancholically embracing a lamb. An obvious allegory of purity, the scene combines tenderness with restrained sensuality, in keeping with the moral and sentimental spirit characteristic of French painting in the second half of the 18th century.

The model portrayed here perfectly embodies Greuze's feminine ideal: a blonde, blue-eyed young girl with a youthful face, a clear gaze, and gentle features imbued with innocence. This type of figure, frequently recurring in the works of the master and his pupils, may have been inspired by anonymous models from his circle, or perhaps by a standardized face that became an archetype of feminine virtue in his iconography.

Through its subtle treatment of flesh tones, refined modeling, and delicate expression, this canvas aligns with the productions from Greuze's studio. The quality of execution—especially in the face and the silky rendering of fabrics—particularly evokes the work of Jeanne-Philibert Ledoux, a talented student of the master, whose paintings share the same soft and refined sensitivity.

Whether a studio piece or the work of a close follower, Innocence reflects the dissemination and lasting success of Greuze’s models among the bourgeois and aristocratic classes, where such virtuous and elegant images were often displayed in private salons.

Sold unframed, the painting has been relined and has undergone a few very well-executed restorations.
It is in perfect condition.
