"Pair Of Small Gilt Bronze Candlesticks, Regency Period "
A refined pair of chased and mercury-gilt bronze candlesticks, Regency period, circa 1720. The base has a scalloped shape, reminiscent of a plinth cut like a crossbow, alternating projections and recesses with concave curves, typical of the Regency taste for supple but rigorously constructed lines. It is highlighted by a row of raised ovates, a motif inherited from Antiquity, widely used in classical ornamentation, surmounted by a large molded base in the shape of a cap or bell, decorated with alternating stylized water leaves. The turned shaft is decorated in its center with a molded rod decorated with ovates, which echoes the base. It rises towards an elegant vase, enriched with another motif from classicism with ribbed water leaves of great finesse, in which the bobèches are inserted, themselves cut according to the same scalloped profile as the base, ensuring a beautiful decorative unity. The candlesticks are composed of several removable elements, according to the manufacturing techniques in force under the Regency with molding in 2 parts. Small in size (15.6 cm high), these objects can be considered as toilet candlesticks, intended for intimate or decorative use: dressing table, dressing table, console, or small fireplace. Height: 15.6 cm Condition: Very good, old gilding with patina, complete with their bobèches. A delicate and elegant pair, testifying to the decorative finesse of the very beginning of the 18th century.
