"Pair Of White Marble And Gilded Bronze Candelabras, Louis XVI-directoire Style"
Pair of white marble and gilt bronze candelabra, Louis XVI-Directoire style, probably Turin, late 19th century. Elegant pair of four-light candelabra, composed of a white marble baluster shaft, resting on a stepped circular base. The whole is richly decorated with gilt bronze. The decoration takes up the great motifs of the Louis XVI and Directoire repertoire: – rows of pearls, – friezes of water leaves, – twists of laurel, – heart-shaped rays, – rosettes in flower buds, – pine cones at the top. The twisted light arms are arranged in a balanced sheaf around the central shaft. The original gilding is well preserved, with a soft patina. A slight variation in the bronze decoration at the base of the shafts should be noted, probably linked to an old restoration or a manufacturing variation, without detracting from the coherence of the whole. This type of production is linked to the Italian decorative tradition of the late 19th century, particularly to the workshops active in Turin, influenced by French neoclassical models. Turin, influenced from the 18th century by French models in the Louis XVI style, continued to produce in this vein throughout the 19th century, with a marked revival around 1880–1900 in what is sometimes called the "stile Impero rivisitato" or late neoclassicism. Height: 36 cm Condition: very good overall condition, original gilding, homogeneous patina.
