Interesting Louis XV period perfume box in red Martin varnish speckled with black tortoiseshell effect, decorated with hand-painted gilded chinoiserie on all sides: stylized flowers, branches, pagoda architecture, figures in oriental costume. The lid and the front are decorated with a large central tree-lined scene with a depth effect. This type of lacquer, typically French, was developed by the Martin brothers in the 18th century, in response to the vogue for Far Eastern lacquers. Obtained by the application of thin layers of tinted natural resins, Martin varnish is distinguished by its depth, its brilliance and its painted decorations sometimes inspired by the Chinese imagination, as here. The original fittings are in cut and chiseled brass. The lock works perfectly, with its original key. The interior, entirely covered with its original blue moiré fabric, edged with a blue and silver braid, retains its old mercury mirror, mounted in its textile frame. The lid is held open by an original brass compass. The case contains four cut crystal bottles with silver screw caps and retaining chains, as well as a small silver funnel. Two recesses remain empty, probably intended for a small silver goblet and cup, now missing. The frame of the box is made of sycamore. These so-called "scented" kits were prized in the 18th century by ladies of high society. They bear witness to the refinement of French decorative arts under Louis XV. The Martin varnish, a technique invented to imitate Oriental lacquers, is magnificently executed here in a deep speckled red, enriched with gold leaf decorations. This type of luxury object was generally made in Paris, in workshops specializing in tabletop work, sheathing, and gilding. Dimensions: Width: 20 cm Depth: 19 cm Height: 16 cm Good general condition, wear from use to the Martin varnish Alterations to the tin of the mercury mirror. The braid is slightly faded due to wear, but does not detract from the overall elegance. Two original accessories are missing. Old wormholes, now treated and stabilized. Small rear feet have been added.
