Oil on canvas depicting a marine scene animated by several boats including a large sailboat and by large waves. Signed lower left "Roy". Original canvas and frame, no repainting, later frame.

Félix Ernest Roy, born on October 15, 1824 in Dijon, was a renowned painter and settled in Rennes, where he taught at the fine arts school as an honorary professor. Coming from a bourgeois family, he was the son of Simon Roy and Reine Ouvrier. He married twice: first to Louise Marie Dujardin, with whom he had a son, then to Marie Joséphine Jourjon, with whom he had two other children. Active in Rennes from the 1850s, he left a lasting mark on the artistic community there before dying in the same city on March 18, 1892, at the age of 67.
