"Gong Mask – Kwele People, Gabon / Congo"
This wooden mask, with its pure, symmetrical lines, is typical of the Kwele style. Called a Gong, it is distinguished by its oval shape, domed forehead, triangular nose, and stylized crescent mouth. The red outline framing the face symbolizes strength and vitality, while the rest of the surface, more neutral, evokes calm and control.
Gong masks were used in the rituals of Beete society, particularly to accompany ceremonies related to peace, justice, or community protection. Unlike other, more expressive masks, this one embodies an aesthetic of restraint and spiritual balance.
