Oil on canvas
Good general condition, minor damage.
This pair of large decorative paintings painted in the 1900s/1950s features two iconic compositions by Hubert Robert (1733–1808), a central figure in the French classical landscape.
Landscape with a waterfall:
This painting depicts a spectacular waterfall framed by rocks, surmounted by an ancient bridge leading to a ruined circular temple. Like the views of Tivoli, the scene is enlivened by picturesque figures in a sublime setting.
Landscape with an obelisk:
In the heart of a wooded park stands a monumental fountain adorned with an obelisk, surrounded by walkers. The motif refers to several famous works by Hubert Robert, where architectural elements become a pretext for a reverie on time and nature.
Hubert Robert was one of the most appreciated painters of the second half of the 18th century, both at court and among enlightened amateurs. Trained in Rome, he frequented cosmopolitan artistic circles there and developed a marked taste for ruins, which he inscribed in imaginary landscapes inhabited by elegant figures. Nicknamed during his lifetime "Robert of the ruins", he brilliantly combined a sense of the picturesque, ancient culture and poetic invention. A member of the Royal Academy and first designer of the King's Gardens, he also participated in the decoration of numerous palaces. His work would have a lasting influence on the European decorative landscape.
These paintings, produced in the years 1900/1950, from an Italian collection, by a decorative artist or a specialized workshop, demonstrate a refined taste for decorations inspired by the 18th century. The composition, the shape of the trees, the luminous skies, and the presence of figures are characteristic of a careful reinterpretation of the romantic neoclassical style.
Large-format decorative works, ready to hang.
