"“basque And His Donkey” Roger Berné (1933 - 2002)"
Berné Roger (1933 - 2002) Painter and decorator Born in 1933 in Ciboure Died on August 24, 2002 in Ciboure. Decorator at the Ciboure art pottery until the end of 1968. His great-grandfather Imatz, a boat builder on the banks of the Nivelle, sold a plot of land in 1919 to Mr. Villote, who built the famous Ciboure art pottery there. Mr. Vilotte had noticed "little Roger's" passion for drawing. When he sold the pottery to Mr. Fischer, he told him about it. The latter gave Roger a try during the summer holidays of 1947. After decorating and firing his first vase, Mr. Fischer gave it to him. At the age of 35, in 1968, Roger left the pottery to provide a more substantial income for his family. Having retired, he indulges in his passion with pleasure. He paints and draws typical scenes that he has known and would like to pass on to his grandson. Oil on canvas signed lower left, countersigned on the back and dated 1962, representing a scene of life in the Basque Country. Format: 27 x 35 cm with oak frame: 35.5 x 43.5 cm
