StefanMoses began an apprenticeship with the Silesian children's photographer GreteBodlée in Breslau in 1943. However, he was interned in the Ostlinde forcedlabour camp in 1944 due to his Jewish origins. Following the end of Nazi rule,he worked as a photographer at the National Theatre in Weimar from 1947 to1950. He then moved to Munich and became a photojournalist. He produced photosfor magazines such as Revue, Magnum, Twen and Quick. He became widely known forthe photo reportages he produced for Stern magazine between 1960 and 1968.Moses created artistic records of contemporary and social history, particularlythrough his portraits of people at work, first in West Germany and then in EastGermany. Other notable photo series include: Animal and Its Man, TheTrans-Siberian Railway, The Great Old Ones, Self in the Mirror, Artists MakeMasks and Emigrants and Jews in Germany. Stefan Moses received many honours andawards, including admission to the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1994, theFederal Cross of Merit First Class in 2004, and the Lovis Corinth Prize in2014.
