- Chief of the Pop -

Fred Tiger is referring to Andy Warhol's cover design for John Lennon's album "Menlove Ave" (1986). While Warhol gave perhaps the greatest pop icon of all time different colored hair and an orange skin, thus translating music into color, Fred Tiger illustrates the musician as a chief. While in Warhol's work the black background serves to illuminate John Lennon, in Fred Tiger he emerges from the darkness, his partial coloration fluctuating in a way that intones the music. This mysterious, magical effect is heightened by Lennon's appearance as a chieftain whose feathered headdress extends beyond the picture plane. His mesmerizing gaze seems to be sustained by some forgotten knowledge, underscored by the earthy texture of his face. At the same time, however, his appearance is that of a pop music chieftain, which, in keeping with Pop Art, ironically breaks up the image.
