The micromosaic is set in a solid gold frame, slightly domed and finely crafted, most likely intended as a brooch or jewel for a Grand Tour collector. The back is made of engraved gold sheet, a hallmark of luxurious Roman micromosaics of this era.
This piece is attributable to the famous workshop of Giacomo Raffaelli (1753–1836), a pioneer of the micromosaic art form. A closely related example is housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. M.259-1960), representing one of the most iconic and refined motifs of the Raffaelli repertoire.
